Baileys has been added to list of items used to measure inflation

Baileys is now so popular all year round that it has been added to the nation’s official shopping basket used to measure inflation.

Mention Baileys and it will often conjure up images of snuggling in front of a cosy log fire at Christmas.

Increasingly, however, it also evokes memories of a cooling summer cocktail by the pool.

In fact, the Irish whiskey and cream liqueur is now so popular all year round that it has been added to the nation’s official shopping basket used to measure inflation.

The drink was hugely popular when it was first introduced in 1974 – the year Abba won Eurovision and the nation was beset by blackouts and a three-day week.

While it has never really been out of the drinks cabinet, it is now very much in vogue – used in a wide variety of cocktails and hot drinks.

The liqueur – a mixture of cream, vanilla, chocolate and whiskey – is among a wide range of products added by the Office for National Statistics this year to reflect our changing shopping habits.

Also in are coffee machine pods, large chocolate bars, lemons, high-protein meat-based snacks, microwave rice pouches and computer game Working ROM downloads.

On the way out are entrance fees for nightclubs, reflecting the falling number of dancing spots. CD-Roms, the discs once used to add software to home PCs, are ditched in favour of updates by internet download.

Baileys won gold in the World Spirits Competition in 2012. Often drunk neat over ice, it can also be mixed with rum and Kahlua to make a B52.
