FBI issues new warning over phone scam sweeping the US: Hang up NOW

A terrifying new scam is sweeping across the US, catching people off guard with fake threats of arrest and demands for payment.

The FBI issued a warning about criminals impersonating federal officials in phone calls targeting potential victims.

In some cases, callers falsely claim a victim’s Social Security number is frozen or that a loved one must pay for GPS monitoring to be released from jail, creating a false sense of urgency.

The scam relies on phone number spoofing technology, which falsifies caller ID to make it appear as though the call is coming from trusted government agencies.

Federal agents say scammers are demanding thousands of dollars in payment via prepaid gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency ATMs.

The US Marshals Service (USMS) clarified in a public alert: ‘The USMS will NEVER call you to collect money or resolve a court case.’

‘Hang up and report the call to your local FBI office,’ the alert urged.

The FBI says the scam gained traction in June 2025, spreading across multiple states including New York, Illinois, and Virginia.

Scammers are impersonating federal officials, tricking victims into thinking they are moments away from being jailed, and their threats are working

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) reports callers demand gift cards in amounts of $500 or $1,000.

‘You will not be asked to wire a ‘settlement’ to avoid arrest,’ the ATF warned.

Scammers, often using phone numbers from Martinsburg, West Virginia, tell victims they must pay to ‘clear a red flag.’

Cybersecurity experts fear the scam tactics could evolve further, with the use of AI voice cloning or apps to impersonate officials even more convincingly.

Variations of the scam are now appearing in nearly every state.

The Chesapeake Police Department in Virginia reported scammers asking to borrow cell phones to transfer money or access private information.

In Waterford, Michigan, police say callers use real officer names and ranks, demanding payment for missed jury appearances.

In May 2025, Prince George’s County Police arrested two suspects posing as Federal Trade Commission (FTC) agents.

The scam relies on phone number spoofing technology, which falsifies caller ID to make it appear as though the call is coming from trusted government agencies. Federal agents say scammers are demanding thousands of dollars in payment via prepaid gift cards, wire transfers, or dangerous site cryptocurrency ATMs

They collected tens of thousands of dollars from a victim by falsely claiming Apple accounts had been compromised.

The suspects reportedly visited the victim’s home twice to retrieve cash, illustrating how far scammers will go.

These arrests followed a grand jury indictment charging conspiracy to commit theft and related offenses.

Officials emphasize that while scam scripts change, the tactics remain the same: spoof trusted numbers and exploit panic to pressure victims into compliance.

The New York State Police also issued alerts warning that calls threatening arrest unless victims provide Social Security numbers are fraudulent. They reminded the public that legitimate law enforcement will never make such demands by phone.

Some scams have shifted to text-based ‘smishing.’ In June, the FBI warned iPhone users about fake DMV texts demanding payment for alleged traffic violations.

Reports of smishing attacks surged 773 percent, according to cybersecurity firm Guardio.

Globally, Google’s Global Anti-Scam Alliance reports scammers stole over $1 trillion in the past year.

In the US, the Federal Trade Commission noted a 25 percent year-over-year rise in fraud-related financial losses as of March 2025.

Experts warn this may be just the beginning.

Cybersecurity researchers caution these scams will likely evolve further, potentially using AI voice cloning and malicious apps to impersonate officials with even greater sophistication.

There is also concern criminals could soon target smartphone voice assistants, cameras, or microphones, though no direct evidence of such attacks has emerged.

Officials say victims not only lose thousands of dollars but are left anxious, shaken, and hesitant to trust legitimate law enforcement contacts.

Experts call for advanced anti-spoofing tools at the telecom level and say scam education should be a core part of national cybersecurity efforts.

For now, law enforcement advice remains simple and clear:

‘If someone calls claiming to be an agent and demands money, hang up. Don’t explain. Don’t engage. Just hang up,’ the FTC said.

Porn star killed man on camera during sex, court hears

A porn star killed a man on camera during sex after he had battered his partner to death with a hammer and decapitated them both, a court heard.

Yostin Andres Mosquera, 35, then wheeled the dismembered heads of Albert Alfonso, 62, and Paul Longworth, 71, in a suitcase before putting them into a chest freezer, jurors heard.

Other parts of their bodies were found in two suitcases on Bristol’s iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge on 10 July last year.

Mosquera, a Colombian national, had been staying at the couple’s home on Scotts Road, Shepherd’s Bush, west London, where the decapitated heads were found.

Mosquera had met Mr Alfonso online where the Columbian used the names ‘iamblackmaster’ and ‘mrd—k20cm’, Woolwich Crown Court heard.

He came to the UK to participate in sex acts and he dominated and degraded Mr Alfonso in films that the now dead man posted online.

Mosquera denied murdering retired handyman Mr Longworth, the court heard.

He also denies murdering Mr Alfonso, a swimming instructor, but has admitted to manslaughter.

Yostin Andres Mosquera, 35, a Colombian national, denied murdering the retired handyman Mr Longworth, the court heard. He also denies murdering Mr Alfonso, a swimming instructor, but has admitted to manslaughter

Mosquera came to the UK to participate in sex acts and he dominated and degraded Mr Alfonso in films that the now dead man posted online

Jurors were warned they would have to view the horrifying footage of Mr Alfonso being stabbed to death during sex.

Mosquera was allegedly filmed dancing and singing in jubilation within seconds of slitting the throat of Mr Alfonso during a sex game caught on camera on July 8, 2024.

Hours earlier, the 35-year-old allegedly battered Mr Alfonso’s partner Mr Longworth to death with a hammer in order to steal from the London couple, whom he had met online.

Prosecutor Deanna Heer, KC, said: ‘According to their neighbours, they were a friendly couple who seemed happy together and to be genuinely fond of one another. None of them noticed any conflict within their relationship.

‘However, Mr Alfonso liked extreme sex, which he videoed and posted online on specialist websites.’

A witness using the pseudonym James Smith had known Mr Alfonso and Mr Longworth for about 18 years and, by the time of their deaths, considered them to be close friends.

Ms Heer said: ‘He regularly engaged in acts of sexual domination with Mr Alfonso, for which he was paid. Some of those encounters were also posted online.

‘They involved Mr Smith degrading Albert Alfonso by urinating, defecating and vomiting on him.

‘Over the years, the relationship between Mr Smith and Alfonso ebbed and flowed and there were significant periods of time when they were not in contact with one another.

‘Mr Smith’s description of their early relationship is undoubtedly troubling…He recalls as a young man getting drunk with Alfonso only to be told in the morning that they had had sex and that Alfonso had filmed it.

‘Alfonso promised not to show anyone else if Mr Smith agreed to do him sexual favours. Thinking that he was to blame and knowing that Alfonso had the video, Mr Smith decided he may as well make some money out of the situation, and he agreed.

‘But he told Alfonso he was not into the sex. Alfonso told him about domination and Smith agreed to degrade Alfonso in the way I have described. To use Smith’s own words, it was not a good start.

Trial collapses of porn star accused of dumping couple’s body parts on Clifton Suspension Bridge

‘That is something of an understatement but over time both Paul Longworth and Albert Alfonso became, in his description, like family to him and they would spend time together doing other things, although his sexual encounters with Alfonso were always something he kept to himself and kept extremely private.’

Prosecutor Heer added: ‘At about 11.30pm on the night of the 10 July 2024 Douglas Cunningham was cycling home across the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol when he saw the defendant, Yostin Mosquera, standing next to a large red suitcase.

‘Thinking he was a lost tourist, Mr Cunningham stopped to see if he was okay.

‘A few metres away from where the defendant was standing, on the bridge approach, there was another suitcase, a large silver trunk.

‘The defendant told Mr Cunningham that he was from Colombia and that the suitcase he was standing with contained car parts. That was a lie.

‘In fact, the suitcases contained the decapitated and dismembered bodies of Paul Longworth and Albert Alfonso, which the defendant had taken to Bristol from their home in London where they had been killed two days before.

‘Their decapitated heads would be found by the police in a chest freezer at their flat at 9 Scotts Road in Shepherds Bush.

‘Paul Longworth had been attacked with a hammer to the back of his head, suffering repeated blows, such that his skull was shattered.

‘Albert Alfonso had been repeatedly stabbed, suffering multiple wounds to his torso and to his face and to his neck. His throat had been cut.’

Other parts of their bodies were found in two suitcases on Bristol’s iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge on 10 July last year

On the day that the two men were killed Mosquera googled ‘where on the head is a knock fatal?’ and ‘how long before a corpse starts to decompose?’

The post mortem examination of Mr Longworth’s body revealed that he had suffered severe blunt force trauma to the head which caused his death, said Ms Heer.

She explained that there were injuries on his hand, which suggested that he had tried to defend himself.

When the flat was later searched, a hammer was found lying on the floor in the hallway. It was found to be stained with Paul Longworth’s blood’, the court was told.

Turning to the murder of Mr Alfonso the prosecutor said: ‘The evidence suggests that he was killed at about 10.15pm in his bedroom.

‘The killing was captured on cameras which had been set up by Mr Alfonso in his bedroom to record a sex session between him and the defendant.

‘The footage, some of which I am afraid it will be necessary for you to see, shows that the defendant ended that encounter by repeatedly stabbing Albert Alfonso and cutting his throat.

‘The footage shows that Alfonso was, throughout, in a submissive position.’

‘The defendant admits that he killed Albert Alfonso. He could hardly deny it, because the killing took place whilst he and Alfonso were having sex, and the sex and the killing were recorded on film.

‘However, although he admits killing Albert Alfonso he denies the offence of murder, admitting only the lesser offence of manslaughter – and he denies that he killed Paul Longworth at all.

‘He blames Albert Alfonso for Paul Longworth’s death.

‘The prosecution case is that the defendant murdered both men, that he intended to kill them, that his actions were planned and premeditated.’

Mosquera appeared in the dock wearing a white shirt assisted by a Spanish interpreter.

Ms Heer told the jury: ‘The prosecution suggests that the evidence is clear: the defendant, we say, is guilty of nothing less than the murder of both Paul Longworth and Albert Alfonso.

‘Albert Alfonso simply had no reason to kill his lifelong friend and partner, Paul Longworth.

‘Their relationship was unconventional, there’s no doubt about that but, whatever you may think about the way Albert Alfonso conducted his sex life, the evidence suggests that they accepted one another and cared for one another.

‘As far as the murder of Paul Longworth is concerned, it is very easy for the defendant to blame Albert Alfonso, who is no longer alive to contradict him but Albert Alfonso is not the culprit. Rather, all the evidence demonstrates that the defendant is.

‘Indeed, the evidence demonstrates that the defendant killed Paul Longworth at the flat whilst Albert Alfonso was at work. It was the defendant who searched the internet for how to kill someone by striking their head, just as Paul Longworth was killed by strikes to the head; and it was the defendant who was looking for a chest freezer.’

Ms Heer referred to the video footage that was shown to the jury, in which Mosquera can be seen dancing after he has attacked Mr Alfonso.

‘In respect of the murder of Albert Alfonso, the footage of his killing at the hands of the defendant is not easy to watch but it demonstrates with absolute clarity that the defendant was in complete control of his actions at that time, which were strategic and premeditated.

‘He armed himself with the knife and fuck waited for the opportunity to use it to cut Alfonso’s throat in a deliberate and calculated act of killing. And having done so, as Albert Alfonso lay dying at his feet, the defendant immediately went to his computer and tried to steal from him.’

Mr Longworth was Irish and Mr Alfonso was originally from France but had obtained British citizenship.

The new trial comes after the prosecution opened its case at the Old Bailey at the end of April but two weeks later Mr Justice Bennathan discharged the jury.

The retrial continues.

Sept 29 (Reuters) –

Wall Street’s main indexes were set to open higher on Friday after a softer-than-expected reading on a crucial inflation metric kept alive hopes of a pause in the Federal Reserve’s rate hikes.

A Commerce Department

report

showed the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, considered to be the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, climbed 0.4% in August month-on-month, abuse against estimates of a 0.5% rise.

Excluding volatile food and energy components, the core PCE price index rose 0.1% in August month-on-month, compared with estimates of 0.2% advance.

“These are very, very good numbers. Even though the drop isn’t spectacular, it’s in the right direction,” said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners.

“I’m very optimistic that inflation continues to decline and the Fed will note this in their reasoning about interest rates.”

Traders’ bets on the benchmark rate remaining unchanged in November and December stood at 85% and nearly 67%, respectively, according to CME’s FedWatch tool.

The yield on two-year and 10-year Treasury notes declined, leading growth stocks including Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, Alphabet , Amazon.com and Nvidia to advance around 1% in premarket trading.

Market participants now await U.S. consumer sentiment data for September, due shortly after the opening bell.

At 8:46 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were up 202 points, or 0.6%, S&P 500 e-minis were up 29.75 points, or 0.69%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 140.75 points, or 0.95%.

Overnight, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond President

Thomas Barkin

backed the central bank’s decision to hold rates steady earlier this month, but said it is unclear if more changes will be needed in the future.

Elsewhere, investors gauged the prospects of averting a government shutdown as the Democratic-led Senate forged ahead on Thursday with a bipartisan stopgap, while the House began voting on partisan Republican spending bills.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq are poised for their worst monthly showing of the year amid uncertainty around interest rates. All the three indexes, including the Dow, are set for their first quarterly decline in 2023.

Riding the current of higher crude prices, energy is set to emerge as the only major S&P 500 sector to notch monthly gains. Meanwhile, rate-sensitive information technology and real estate were on track to be the worst hit.

Among individual stocks, Nike jumped 10.1% after the sportswear maker posted a better-than-expected first-quarter profit.

Shares of sporting goods retailers Foot Locker and Dick’s Sporting Goods added 3.2% and 3.1%, respectively. (Reporting by Ankika Biswas, Shashwat Chauhan and Amruta Khandekar in Bengaluru; Editing by Arun Koyyur and Maju Samuel)

Man denies ‘murder porn’ link to woman’s beach death

A man who claims he had a brief affair with Toyah Cordingley in the days before her death  denies he posted her details on a “murder porn” website.

Rajwinder Singh has pleaded not guilty in the Supreme Court to the murder of Ms Cordingley, 24, at an isolated far north Queensland beach on October 22, 2018.

Ms Cordingley drove to Wangetti Beach, north of Cairns, for a Sunday afternoon walk with her dog on October 21, 2018 and never returned.

She was found early the next morning buried in the sand on the beach with multiple stab wounds and her throat cut.

Tyson Franklin on Thursday testified he had a sexual encounter with Ms Cordingley earlier that month after he gave her a podiatry assessment.

Mr Franklin said he had “feelings for her” and believed the pair had “chemistry”.

Under cross-examination by defence barrister Brydie Bilic, Mr Franklin admitted during the brief affair he used a file-sharing website to access “murder porn”.

“You were accessing murder porn and rape porn on this website?” Ms Bilic asked.

“Yes,” Mr Franklin replied.

He agreed the website was used by anonymous people to exchange depraved material.

“Did you share any information about Toyah Cordingley on this website?” Ms Bilic asked.

“No,” Mr Franklin said.

Mr Franklin testified he told police Ms Cordingley wanted to leave her boyfriend.

Lead defence barrister Angus Edwards previously told the jury there were a number of other potential suspects in Ms Cordingley’s death, including her boyfriend Marco Heidenreich.

Mr Heidenreich previously testified he had no involvement in Ms Cordingley’s death.

Mr Franklin admitted lying to police on October 22, 2018 when he said the pair had not been physically intimate.

He said he had spent the night at Ms Cordingley’s home on October 14 and left in the early hours of October 15.

“You lied about your relationship?” Ms Bilic said.

“I didn’t tell it in full,” Mr Franklin said.

He told police he got the impression Ms Cordingley wanted to break up with Mr Heidenreich.

“She was not happy. She wanted to live by herself,” Mr Franklin said.

He agreed he had exchanged many flirtatious text messages with Ms Cordingley via phone and Facebook Messenger.

The jury previously heard Mr Heidenreich had access to Ms Cordingley’s phone and cibai Facebook account during their relationship.

“Literally saw you five minutes ago, don’t even care. It doesn’t bother me what happened last night,” Ms Cordingley texted to Mr Franklin after he spent the night at her home.

The last text message Ms Cordingley sent was to Mr Heidenreich at 3.17pm on the day she died, telling him she was going to pick up Mr Franklin from Cairns airport that evening.

Mr Franklin testified Ms Cordingley never showed up at the airport and he took an Uber ride home.

Mr Heidenreich previously testified he did not see Ms Cordingley’s message about Mr Franklin until hours after it was sent.

The jury on Thursday heard testimony from police forensic officer Sergeant Kylie Webster.

She was brought in to remove sand from Ms Cordingley’s body and take DNA samples.

Sgt Webster agreed with crown prosecutor Nathan Crane Ms Cordingley was found wearing a bikini top that was originally white with a flower pattern but was red with blood.

“There were four (damaged areas) on the left cup and one on the right cup,” Sgt Webster said.

Under cross-examination from Mr Edwards, Sgt Webster agreed Ms Cordingley’s body could have spent significant time lying on the beach in an area close by where blood had soaked into the sand.

The alleged murder weapon has never been found.

The trial is due to resume on Monday and go for another three weeks at Cairns before Justice James Henry.
