Gen Z share hilarious memes in reaction to national service plan

Gen Z have taken the internet by storm with their hilarious memes in response to Rishi Sunak’s national service announcement, as MailOnline can reveal 66 percent of our readers are in favour of the policy.

Writing in The Mail On Sunday, Mr Sunak unveiled plans which would see all school-leavers either serve in the Armed Forces for one year or spend 12 weekends a year volunteering with organisations such as the NHS or police.

The shock announcement has sparked a fierce debate across the political spectrum, but the Prime Minister said he believes it will help unite the country.

But Labour has called the plan ‘desperate’ and blasted the £2.5 billion expected cost of the project.

Today it can be revealed that in a poll of our readers, two thirds said they are in favour of the return of some form of national service.

Online Gen Z seem far from convinced, with many pointing out the significant sacrifices made to their education and university experiences during the pandemic.

‘Dawn from Stoke’ tells Rishi Sunak her sons needed National Service growing up because they are ‘more brawn than brains’

Taking to TikTok and X, formally Twitter, they shared hilarious memes mocking the plans.

One user posted a short clip of Jack Grealish appearing confused as to how to make a confetti cannon go off.

Pointing it towards his body, he eventually does get the confetti out, but in the wrong direction. The poster wrote: ‘Me when they give me my gun at national service.’

The Prime Minister today claimed ‘people are really excited’ about his plan to bring in national service for all 18-year-olds.

Speaking from Churchill China, a ceramics company in Stoke-on-Trent, Mr Sunak told reporters: ‘People are really excited about national service, because that is an example of the bold action that we’re prepared to take and people can see that that’s going to be transformational for our country.

‘And as I’ve said all the MPs that I’ve been spending time with over the last four days are working their socks off for their communities.’

Rishi Sunak insisted he has not given up on young people as he described his national service plan as ‘transformational’ and ‘incredibly positive for young people’.

He told reporters: ‘I think providing young people, regardless of their background, where they’re from, where they live, memek with the opportunities that national service will provide, the skills that it will give them later in life, will be hugely positive for them.

‘And at the same time, foster a culture of service in our country that will make our societies more cohesive, and strengthen our security and resilience as a country.’

He added: ‘I think service is a really wonderful thing and it gives people purpose. So I view national service as something that’s really positive and beneficial for people.

‘Giving them the opportunity to do that and contribute to their communities in this way, be part of something that’s bigger than any individual, that I think will become a rite of passage and something very meaningful for our entire country will be over time, people will look back on it and look back on their time doing it with enormous fondness and pride.’

But his political opponents have branded the plan a sign of his ‘desperation’

Military roles in the proposed national service scheme will be ‘very competitive and selective’, Mr Sunak told the crowd

The Prime Minister was welcomed to Staffordshire by MP Jonathan Gullis, who represents Stoke-on-Trent

Liberal Democrat MP Helen Morgan said the plan, which is expected to cost £2.5 billion if ever implemented, is ‘desperate’.

Ms Morgan said: ‘What’s wrong in places like North Shropshire, is that we don’t have enough young people to work in those skilled jobs that we already have, and dragging them away to do national service will make the economy much worse.

‘We want to see people trained in apprenticeships to do the jobs that we need filling.’

A spokesperson for Labour responded to the announcement, made over the weekend, and said: ‘This is another desperate, £2.5bn unfunded commitment from a Tory party which already crashed the economy, sending mortgages rocketing, and now they’re spoiling for more.

‘This is not a plan – it’s a review which could cost billions and is only needed because the Tories hollowed out the armed forces to their smallest size since Napoleon. Britain has had enough of the Conservatives, who are bankrupt of ideas, and have no plans to end 14 years of chaos.’

(Updates for market open)

By Johann M Cherian and Sukriti Gupta

Feb 24 (Reuters) – The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq gave up early gains and declined in choppy trading on Monday, as investors awaited results from chip giant Nvidia for clues on the future of demand for artificial intelligence technology.

Most megacap stocks fell, with Tesla sliding 2.7%, Meta down 2.1% and Microsoft losing 1.9%.

Microsoft has scrapped leases for sizeable data center capacity in the U.S., suggesting a potential oversupply of AI infrastructure, TD Cowen analysts said in a note published late on Friday. The note picked up traction on social media platforms over the weekend, and several media outlets covered the development on Monday.

The news comes weeks after the launch of low-cost AI models from China’s DeepSeek in January rattled tech stocks and stoked doubts about overspending by U.S. companies on the popular technology.

“Everybody’s deepest fear is, even though Microsoft, Google, and Meta, have great funding, we don’t know that they’re really going to go through on their spending plans again because the tide is changing,” said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners.

“The note of caution on here is how are they going to get all this money paid back?”

Chip stocks also fell, with the broader Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index down 1.6%.

Nvidia’s quarterly results, expected on Wednesday, puts the chip sector in the spotlight for the week.

On the other hand, Apple reversed premarket declines to gain 1.1%. The iPhone maker unveiled planned U.S. investments to help bring online a factory in Texas by 2026 to build AI servers and add about 20,000 research and development jobs across the country.

At 10:11 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 28.60 points, or 0.07%, to 43,456.62, the S&P 500 lost 14.54 points, or 0.24%, to 5,998.59 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 141.43 points, or tante sange 0.72%, to 19,382.58.

The more domestically-focused Russell 2000 smallcaps index lost 1%.

Eight of the 11 S&P 500 sectors slipped. Technology stocks led declines with a 0.9% drop.

U.S. stock indexes were extending losses registered in the previous week, when a batch of weak economic data and a disappointing forecast from Walmart had sparked concerns that the world’s largest economy was stalling. The benchmark S&P 500 and a smallcaps index marked their worst daily declines of 2025 on Friday.

On the data front, the Personal Consumption Expenditure index – the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge – is expected on Friday and could help markets gauge the timing of the central bank’s first rate cut this year.

Interest rate futures indicate the Fed will leave borrowing costs unchanged for the first half of the year, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Among other big movers, Berkshire’s Class B shares rose 3.5% to touch a record high after the Warren Buffett-owned conglomerate reported a record annual profit over the weekend.

Nike added 5.1% after Jefferies raised its rating on the athletic apparel maker to “buy” from “hold”.

Domino’s Pizza fell 5% after the pizza chain missed expectations for fourth-quarter same-store sales.

Markets are also on edge for any tariff comments from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.37-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 2.16-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.

The S&P 500 posted 22 new 52-week highs and 6 new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 27 new highs and 149 new lows.

By Lisa Pauline Mattackal

Oct 29 (Reuters) – Wall Street was little changed on Tuesday as investors assessed a host of corporate results and awaited Google-parent Alphabet’s earnings later in the day.

“Magnificent Seven” member Alphabet’s shares rose 0.35% ahead of its results due after market close, where it is expected to post its slowest revenue growth in four quarters.

This week marks the busiest period for S&P 500 earnings, with eyes on five of the “Magnificent Seven” group of stocks that are reporting quarterly results.

The group’s results will be crucial to determining whether Wall Street can sustain the optimism around technology and artificial intelligence that has lifted indexes to record highs this year.

However, rate-sensitive stocks were under pressure as bond yields continued to rise, with the benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yield breaching the 4.3% level for the first time since early July.

“It does look like the curve is normalizing, but I do think (yields) will move down at the end of the election and whenever we get more data showing the Fed’s view of inflation versus jobs is correct,” said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners.

Nvidia was trading 0.2% lower, while Apple was flat.

There were plenty of earnings for investors to sift through. Vans parent VF Corp jumped 27.9% after the company reported a profit for the first time in two quarters.

Ford slumped nearly 8% after the automaker said on Monday it expects to hit the lower end of its annual profit forecast.

D.R. Horton dropped 12.7% on Tuesday after the homebuilder forecast 2025 revenue below estimates, while McDonald’s dipped 2.4% after reporting a drop in global sales.

Meanwhile, the Labor Department’s JOLTS survey showed job openings were at 7.44 million in September, compared with estimates of 8 million, according to a Reuters poll of economists.

A separate report showed consumer confidence stood at 108.7 in October, higher than the estimated 99.5.

Traders added to bets on further reductions to U.S. short-term borrowing costs after the data, which helped stock indexes pare some initial losses.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 19.94 points, or 0.05%, to 42,407.51, the S&P 500 gained 0.86 points, or 0.01%, to 5,824.38, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 22.83 points, or 0.12%, to 18,590.02.

The communication services sector, housing Alphabet and Meta, was the top sectoral gainer, while utilities fell to the bottom.

With earnings, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the upcoming U.S. elections and a Fed meeting, investors are anticipating a volatile few weeks.

The VIX has risen above 20 from below 15 in September.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers for a 2.3-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and a 1.46-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.

The S&P 500 posted 13 new 52-week highs and no new low, while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 44 new highs and memek 33 new lows.

Man denies ‘murder porn’ link to woman’s beach death

A man who claims he had a brief affair with Toyah Cordingley in the days before her death  denies he posted her details on a “murder porn” website.

Rajwinder Singh has pleaded not guilty in the Supreme Court to the murder of Ms Cordingley, 24, at an isolated far north Queensland beach on October 22, 2018.

Ms Cordingley drove to Wangetti Beach, north of Cairns, for a Sunday afternoon walk with her dog on October 21, 2018 and never returned.

She was found early the next morning buried in the sand on the beach with multiple stab wounds and her throat cut.

Tyson Franklin on Thursday testified he had a sexual encounter with Ms Cordingley earlier that month after he gave her a podiatry assessment.

Mr Franklin said he had “feelings for her” and believed the pair had “chemistry”.

Under cross-examination by defence barrister Brydie Bilic, Mr Franklin admitted during the brief affair he used a file-sharing website to access “murder porn”.

“You were accessing murder porn and rape porn on this website?” Ms Bilic asked.

“Yes,” Mr Franklin replied.

He agreed the website was used by anonymous people to exchange depraved material.

“Did you share any information about Toyah Cordingley on this website?” Ms Bilic asked.

“No,” Mr Franklin said.

Mr Franklin testified he told police Ms Cordingley wanted to leave her boyfriend.

Lead defence barrister Angus Edwards previously told the jury there were a number of other potential suspects in Ms Cordingley’s death, including her boyfriend Marco Heidenreich.

Mr Heidenreich previously testified he had no involvement in Ms Cordingley’s death.

Mr Franklin admitted lying to police on October 22, 2018 when he said the pair had not been physically intimate.

He said he had spent the night at Ms Cordingley’s home on October 14 and left in the early hours of October 15.

“You lied about your relationship?” Ms Bilic said.

“I didn’t tell it in full,” Mr Franklin said.

He told police he got the impression Ms Cordingley wanted to break up with Mr Heidenreich.

“She was not happy. She wanted to live by herself,” Mr Franklin said.

He agreed he had exchanged many flirtatious text messages with Ms Cordingley via phone and Facebook Messenger.

The jury previously heard Mr Heidenreich had access to Ms Cordingley’s phone and cibai Facebook account during their relationship.

“Literally saw you five minutes ago, don’t even care. It doesn’t bother me what happened last night,” Ms Cordingley texted to Mr Franklin after he spent the night at her home.

The last text message Ms Cordingley sent was to Mr Heidenreich at 3.17pm on the day she died, telling him she was going to pick up Mr Franklin from Cairns airport that evening.

Mr Franklin testified Ms Cordingley never showed up at the airport and he took an Uber ride home.

Mr Heidenreich previously testified he did not see Ms Cordingley’s message about Mr Franklin until hours after it was sent.

The jury on Thursday heard testimony from police forensic officer Sergeant Kylie Webster.

She was brought in to remove sand from Ms Cordingley’s body and take DNA samples.

Sgt Webster agreed with crown prosecutor Nathan Crane Ms Cordingley was found wearing a bikini top that was originally white with a flower pattern but was red with blood.

“There were four (damaged areas) on the left cup and one on the right cup,” Sgt Webster said.

Under cross-examination from Mr Edwards, Sgt Webster agreed Ms Cordingley’s body could have spent significant time lying on the beach in an area close by where blood had soaked into the sand.

The alleged murder weapon has never been found.

The trial is due to resume on Monday and go for another three weeks at Cairns before Justice James Henry.
