For a film about sex work to win an Oscar is rare. For it to win the respect of sex workers is even rarer.
If Sean Baker’s “Anora” triumphs at the Academy Awards next Sunday, as predicted by most pundits, it will have achieved both.
“Sean gets sex work. He just does,” porn actress and director Casey Calvert tells AFP, as she prepares to film an explicit lesbian scene on a set in the San Fernando Valley.
“Sean is the only working mainstream filmmaker who has the ability to get it right. He’s also the only one who cares about getting it right,” adds adult film veteran Eli Cross, who is the cinematographer for the day.

Baker’s journey to the Oscars began in this valley next to Los Angeles, infamously and accurately dubbed the capital of the US porn industry.
It was here that he shot “Starlet,” a micro-budget film about a young adult actress who forms an unlikely friendship with an elderly widow.
Baker’s candid portrayal of an industry used to being maligned and sensationalized by Hollywood earned him the friendship of porn workers like Calvert, who later worked as a paid consultant on his film “Red Rocket.”

She will be among the many pornographers and sex workers cheering on “Anora” as it competes for best picture, best director, best actress for Mikey Madison, and much more on March 2.
“It’s so exciting to me that I can’t even think about it,” says Calvert.
“It would feel like this industry that I love being recognized on a stage it’s never been recognized before on.”
– ‘Really skeptical’ –
“Anora” follows Ani, a New York stripper and escort, as she embarks on an ill-fated, whirlwind romance with a bratty young Russian customer who turns out to be the son of an oligarch.

Typical of Baker’s movies, it is stuffed with details that “civilian” viewers might miss.
These range from the pole-dancing bruises on Ani’s legs, to the way she licks her fingers before instigating a sex act.
“It’s just such a sex worker thing to do. It’s so in character,” explains Calvert.
Authenticity is not something sex workers expect from Hollywood.
Most famously, “Pretty Woman” served up a sanitized fairy tale about a prostitute and her wealthy savior.
“The sex work industry as a whole is really skeptical of any film having to do with sex work,” says Calvert.

Following the world premiere of “Anora,” Baker told AFP he had deliberately avoided the “hooker with a heart of gold” cliches.
For Kontol Calvert, Baker’s films stand out because they are not really about sex work — they are about the struggles, emotions and humanity of people who happen to do sex work for a living.
“It’s not about the taboo of sex. It’s just about a marginalized community of people who he finds really interesting and wants to explore,” she says.

That such remarks caused zero controversy arguably represents a sea change in Hollywood.

“We’ve come a long way, baby — we really have,” she told AFP.

Still, Calvert says the “stigma” surrounding pornography remains fierce, with highly experienced and talented adult filmmakers rarely able to cross over into Hollywood work.

‘Then this gave us a way of following the video, figuring out who is actually behind the money and who is advertising next to this image-based sexual abuse.’
She added: ‘I would say obviously the hardest part for me was having to see how widespread my video still is.
‘I have a lot of people messaging me all the time, sending me clips of it, it’s always something in the back of my mind, but having to really face head-on exactly where it is and how many places it’s in was a real struggle for me.
‘To overcome that, I always remind myself that sometimes when you have a problem, the only way you can face it is head-on.
‘The only way for it to be impossible for not only my video but any victim of image-based sexual abuse’s video not to be online in the future is for there to be more awareness and for the government and higher-up companies within the internet to get together and face it head-on.
‘For me, I know it wasn’t the easiest thing to do, it was the best thing I can do for my future and other women’s future.’

‘It was just like the worst feeling you can ever possibly imagine. I felt violated, I felt embarrassed – I hated myself for a really long time.’
Stephen, from Loughton, Essex, was sentenced to 21 months in March 2023 after a jury found him guilty of voyeurism and disclosing private, sexual photographs and films.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) previously told how Stephen has shown ‘a complete lack of remorse’.
Ahead of his sentencing, he posed for selfies outside court and sang Lady In Red to a reporter wearing a red coat. He also arrived for hearings, supported by his father, in lavish outfits and a Rolls Royce.
As he was jailed, he waved from the dock and said: ‘Have a good evening. Enjoy the weekend everyone.’

In March last year, he was ordered to pay £22,305 to retrieve the money he made by sharing the sex tape on OnlyFans. He was also ordered to pay £5,000 in compensation to Georgia.
Chelmsford Crown Court confirmed the £22,305 was paid in full on May 8 last year.
It comes after Georgia said she was awarded £207,900 damages following a High Court case but that Stephen had paid ‘not one penny’ of it.
The Big Brother winner sold his home in Loughton while he was in prison to pay his legal bills.

Women who watch too much porn may suffer disturbing personality change
Women who watch ‘too much’ porn are more likely to suffer with low self-esteem, concerning research has suggested.
Doctors have long insisted that porn consumption can be part of a functional sex life.
However problematic pornography use (PPU) is on the rise, experts fear, and has been linked to a raft of conditions including anxiety, depression and withdrawal symptoms.
Now Chinese researchers, who tracked the porn habits of more than 500 young women, found those with PPU — defined as someone persistently having an uncontrollable or intense urge to use porn even when it impairs functioning or relationships — had lower ‘self-acceptance’ and found it difficult to set goals.
Experts, who labelled the findings important, suggested women experiencing the problem could benefit from talking therapy to tackle the addiction.
The porn addiction phenomenon has arisen alongside the proliferation of internet streaming pornography, which is easy to access on personal computers or smartphones.
The UK has the second highest incidence of internet porn searches in the world, with an average of 16,600,000 searches for porn taking place each month.
Nine in ten adults now admit to viewing adult material.

But the actual truth of how many are suffering from the addiction is unknow.
Many suffers avoid seeking professional help out of shame and embarrassment for their affliction or fear of exposure.
In the fresh study, researchers tracked the porn habits of 559 female University students from Sichuan, southern China, who were aged 20 on average.
This was because most research on pornography use has been conducted on men, making it difficult to generalise those findings to women, the scientists noted.
The volunteers completed an online survey that assessed how frequently they accessed porn, how they accessed it, whether they had experienced any issues in setting goal-directed behaviours and their level of esteem.
The researchers from the Southwest University of Science and Technology, asked participants to complete a similar survey a year later to compare results.
They found that women who had higher levels of PPU at the start of the study were more likely to show elevated problematic use one year later.

Problematic porn use was linked to those who had average or lower than average self-acceptance, they said.
Writing in the journal Computers in Human Behavior, the researchers added: ‘Among women with above-average self-acceptance, pornography use frequency was not associated with problematic pornography use.’
The findings demonstrate that higher pornography use can create ‘difficulties with engaging in goal-directed behavior and self-acceptance’, they added.
Experts have long, however, raised the alarm over the risks of trying to quit porn quickly, suggesting many experience withdrawal symptoms and unpleasant feelings.
Last year, researchers in Brazil warned that regular porn-users who try to stop suddenly can suffer physical withdrawal-like symptoms such as headaches, chills and even nausea.
After reviewing 14 separate studies they discovered that, as with drugs and other compulsive behaviours such as gambling addiction, being hooked on porn could trigger physical withdrawal symptoms in up to 72 per cent of users.
One study found 57 per cent of participants experienced ‘cravings’, while 52 per cent also experienced heightened emotions, difficulties in focus and nervousness.
A smaller number — roughly one in 20 — reported sleeping difficulties, headaches, sweating, chills, sickness when they tried to quit porn.

The researchers discovered that in most cases people had ‘intense cravings’ to masturbate to porn that caused them to relapse.
They noted that several of these withdrawal-like symptoms were seen in regular users of porn who weren’t classifies as severe enough to have an addiction.
Following the review authors called for further research to investigate onset, characteristics, duration and proportion of withdrawal-like symptoms.
Sex, and intimacy more generally, has been linked to a string of health benefits, including improving the condition of your heart, reducing stress and even boosting mental health.
