Women who watch too much porn may suffer disturbing personality change

Women who watch ‘too much’ porn are more likely to suffer with low self-esteem, concerning research has suggested.

Doctors have long insisted that porn consumption can be part of a functional sex life.

However problematic pornography use (PPU) is on the rise, experts fear, and has been linked to a raft of conditions including anxiety, depression and withdrawal symptoms.

Now Chinese researchers, who tracked the porn habits of more than 500 young women, found those with PPU — defined as someone persistently having an uncontrollable or intense urge to use porn even when it impairs functioning or relationships — had lower ‘self-acceptance’ and found it difficult to set goals.

Experts, who labelled the findings important, suggested women experiencing the problem could benefit from talking therapy to tackle the addiction.

The porn addiction phenomenon has arisen alongside the proliferation of internet streaming pornography, which is easy to access on personal computers or smartphones.

The UK has the second highest incidence of internet porn searches in the world, with an average of 16,600,000 searches for porn taking place each month.

Nine in ten adults now admit to viewing adult material.

Chinese researchers, who tracked the porn habits of more than 500 young women, found those with PPU had lower ‘self-acceptance’ and found it difficult to set goals

Some research suggests one in ten adults may now suffer a degree of PPU, with higher numbers in young people. They may watch porn for up to 12 hours a week.

But the actual truth of how many are suffering from the addiction is unknow.

Many suffers avoid seeking professional help out of shame and embarrassment for their affliction or fear of exposure.

In the fresh study, researchers tracked the porn habits of 559 female University students from Sichuan, southern China, who were aged 20 on average.

This was because most research on pornography use has been conducted on men, making it difficult to generalise those findings to women, the scientists noted.

The volunteers completed an online survey that assessed how frequently they accessed porn, how they accessed it, whether they had experienced any issues in setting goal-directed behaviours and their level of esteem.

The researchers from the Southwest University of Science and Technology, asked participants to complete a similar survey a year later to compare results.

They found that women who had higher levels of PPU at the start of the study were more likely to show elevated problematic use one year later.

Some research suggests one in ten adults may now suffer a degree of PPU, with higher numbers in young people. They may watch porn for up to 12 hours a week. But the actual truth of how many are suffering from the addiction is unknow

Problematic porn use was linked to those who had average or lower than average self-acceptance, they said.

Writing in the journal Computers in Human Behavior, the researchers added: ‘Among women with above-average self-acceptance, pornography use frequency was not associated with problematic pornography use.’

The findings demonstrate that higher pornography use can create ‘difficulties with engaging in goal-directed behavior and self-acceptance’, they added.

Experts have long, however, raised the alarm over the risks of trying to quit porn quickly, suggesting many experience withdrawal symptoms and unpleasant feelings.

Last year, researchers in Brazil warned that regular porn-users who try to stop suddenly can suffer physical withdrawal-like symptoms such as headaches, chills and even nausea.

After reviewing 14 separate studies they discovered that, as with drugs and other compulsive behaviours such as gambling addiction, being hooked on porn could trigger physical withdrawal symptoms in up to 72 per cent of users.

One study found 57 per cent of participants experienced ‘cravings’, while 52 per cent also experienced heightened emotions, difficulties in focus and nervousness.

A smaller number — roughly one in 20 — reported sleeping difficulties, headaches, sweating, chills, sickness when they tried to quit porn.

Problematic porn use is a form of compulsive sexual behaviour that can lead to sufferers neglecting relationships, personal health, other interests and responsibilities

The researchers discovered that in most cases people had ‘intense cravings’ to masturbate to porn that caused them to relapse.

They noted that several of these withdrawal-like symptoms were seen in regular users of porn who weren’t classifies as severe enough to have an addiction.

Following the review authors called for further research to investigate onset, characteristics, duration and proportion of withdrawal-like symptoms.

Sex, and intimacy more generally, has been linked to a string of health benefits, including improving the condition of your heart, reducing stress and even boosting mental health.

But recent trends show prudish Brits aren’t having as much sex as they used to.

According to a Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) poll of 2,000 adults last year, men and women typically romp just 46 times a year — once every eight days.

Former banker slams ‘crazy’ reason she was turned down for a loan

A highly paid porn star has lashed out at a bank for rejecting her home loan application because of how she makes her money.

Layla Kelly said she has been raking in more than $250,000 a year by posting X-rated content on her OnlyFans account.

The enterprise has been so successful that it has gone from a part-time hobby to a full-blown career – and allowed Ms Kelly and her husband of 19 years, who films and edits her content, to save up a six-figure deposit for a home.

The 34-year-old said it was something she never thought possible in her former life as a banker on a salary of $65,000.

But the couple’s plans to by a home hit an unexpected hurdle last November.

Ms Kelly her mortgage broker sent the application to several banks to see who could offer the best loan terms, and one New Zealand bank refused it outright.

‘One bank came back and said they wouldn’t even consider the application because of the industry I work in,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

In her initial application she listed her job as ‘content creator’ but the bank wanted more detail on the content.

The 34-year-old says she formerly worked as a banker on a salary of $65,000

When she responded that she ran an OnlyFans account, she was told to list her occupation as ‘sex work’.

But once she did, the bank refused to assess her application.

‘I was shocked and I was angry to begin with – I just thought it was ridiculous,’ she said.

‘It feels like financial discrimination, but apparently in New Zealand they can discriminate on the basis of your job.

‘There are a lot of New Zealanders that fall under that category and we pay tax – I pay heaps of tax.’

Eventually, she was able to secure a loan from another bank and buy a house in the national capital Wellington.

But Ms Kelly said the rejection from the first bank, which she had decided not to name, had left a sour taste.

‘It’s crazy to me, because if it’s a moral issue – and moral issues shouldn’t enter into banking – then do they support businesses that sell cigarettes or gambling products?’ she said.

‘If my money’s not good enough for you, then I don’t want to bank with you anyway.’

More Aussies seeking help for sex and porn addiction

More Australians are seeking support for sex and pornography addiction as private, paid content platforms rise in popularity.

In 2023, the number of users and creators accessing OnlyFans, a subscription and pay-per-view platform, increased by nearly 30 per cent, showing the growing demand for private pornographic content.

The site also reported a 19 per cent increase in gross payments processed to $6.63 billion.

The Banyans Healthcare, a rehabilitation centre located in Brisbane’s Bowen Hills, reported a 184 per cent increase in enquiries for pornography or sex addiction support in the past six months.

Platforms like OnlyFans had legitimised pornography in an unhelpful way as more people viewed it as a career option, psychologist Gavin Brown told AAP.

“We have people talking very publicly about their careers on OnlyFans and how much money they’re making – it’s an extension of the influencer phenomenon without people thinking about the long-term consequences,” he said.

“We’ve glamorised something that is actually very harmful.”

Porn addiction was something that needed to be talked about “a whole lot more”, particularly its impact on younger generations, Dr Brown said.

“It’s important to understand the harms of online pornography, which is manifestly different to the old version of magazine pornography,” he said.

“The difference with the internet is that you can literally be looking at a new image every second, which affects the brain circuitry and becomes much more reinforcing than old print forms.”

Experts suspect platforms like OnlyFans could increase the risk of a user developing a porn addiction because it provides a never-ending stream of explicit content tailored to their own desires.

Some of the warning signs of a developing addiction include loss of interest in a partner, withdrawing from other activities to spend time watching porn and looking for more and more explicit content.

Online pornography is prevalent in the lives of young people and first encountered at an average age of 13, according to a 2022 study by the Australian eSafety Commissioner.

First encounters with online pornography were most commonly unintentional and for around one-in-three Australians, this occurred before the age of 13.

“Unfortunately, while the symptoms of pornography addiction can be less visible than other behavioural conditions, it can still negatively interfere in daily life, relationships and wellbeing, and have devastating impacts on the individual,” Dr Brown said.

The NSW government has established an inquiry into the impacts of harmful pornography on mental, emotional and physical health, with its first public hearing due to be held on Monday.

Early exposure to pornography can have a significant negative impact on the development of young people’s attitudes about gender roles, identities and relationships, anti-violence organisation Our Watch said.

In a submission to the parliamentary inquiry, sex worker organisation Scarlet Alliance said law-makers must engage meaningfully with those involved in porn production to avoid perpetuating stigma and discrimination towards marginalised communities.

“Family, sexual and other gender-based violence cannot be addressed by the implementation of anti-sex work or anti-pornography policies,” chief executive Mish Pony said.

Treatment and support for sex and porn addiction is available like any other mental health challenge, Banyans Healthcare founder Ruth Limkin said.

“The World Health Organisation now formally recognises sex addiction as Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder,” she said.

“Like many addictions, many people are reluctant to acknowledge their experience and need for help (and) this is why it’s important to discuss the widespread need and normalise help seeking behaviours.”

Georgia Harrison’s ‘struggle’ at how ‘widespread’ her sex tape is

Georgia Harrison has revealed her ‘struggle’ at discovering just how ‘widespread’ her leaked sex tape with now convicted sex offender Stephen Bear is.

Pricasso the penis painter paints our portraitThe Love Island star, 30, discusses the video in her new ITV documentary Georgia Harrison: Porn, Power, Profit which takes a look at the revenge porn industry and also investigates the ever-expanding Deep Fake porn world.

Stephen, a former Celebrity Big Brother winner, served half of a 21-month prison sentence and was then ordered to pay the £22,305 that prosecutors estimated that he earned from illegally sharing the footage on OnlyFans.

Now Georgia has taken on the difficult task of tracking down the places where the leaked video still exists as part of her upcoming programme.

She described the experience, saying: ‘What we really wanted to do was get to the bottom of who is behind the posting of image-based sexual abuse that’s still out there.

‘The first part involves me having to really look into where my video still is which is obviously a really tough thing to do, but by doing that we could then decipher how many different sites it was on.

‘Then this gave us a way of following the video, figuring out who is actually behind the money and who is advertising next to this image-based sexual abuse.’

She added: ‘I would say obviously the hardest part for me was having to see how widespread my video still is.

‘I have a lot of people messaging me all the time, sending me clips of it, it’s always something in the back of my mind, but having to really face head-on exactly where it is and how many places it’s in was a real struggle for me.

‘To overcome that, I always remind myself that sometimes when you have a problem, the only way you can face it is head-on.

‘The only way for it to be impossible for not only my video but any victim of image-based sexual abuse’s video not to be online in the future is for there to be more awareness and for the government and higher-up companies within the internet to get together and face it head-on.

‘For me, I know it wasn’t the easiest thing to do, it was the best thing I can do for my future and other women’s future.’

During the filming of the documentary, Georgia spoke to porn site creators, a Pornhub representative and private investigators to delve into both branches of the industry.

The TV personality also explained how she recovered from her ordeal.

‘I overcame that by having such a strong family, such an amazing partner and amazing friends,’ she said.

‘They are just so supportive in every way of everything that I do and they just make it so much easier for me to really look at things from an outward perspective and to really let go of a lot of shame which naturally does arise for victims throughout the rest of their lives.’

Georgia, who waived her right to anonymity as she campaigned for stricter laws around revenge porn, told the Proceeds of Crime hearing at the time: ‘I had to live in fear that this was going to come out and my family were going to know about it.

‘It was just like the worst feeling you can ever possibly imagine. I felt violated, I felt embarrassed – I hated myself for a really long time.’

Stephen, from Loughton, Essex, was sentenced to 21 months in March 2023 after a jury found him guilty of voyeurism and disclosing private, sexual photographs and films.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) previously told how Stephen has shown ‘a complete lack of remorse’.

Ahead of his sentencing, he posed for selfies outside court and sang Lady In Red to a reporter wearing a red coat. He also arrived for hearings, supported by his father, in lavish outfits and a Rolls Royce.

As he was jailed, he waved from the dock and said: ‘Have a good evening. Enjoy the weekend everyone.’

In March last year, he was ordered to pay £22,305 to retrieve the money he made by sharing the sex tape on OnlyFans. He was also ordered to pay £5,000 in compensation to Georgia.

Chelmsford Crown Court confirmed the £22,305 was paid in full on May 8 last year.

It comes after Georgia said she was awarded £207,900 damages following a High Court case but that Stephen had paid ‘not one penny’ of it.

The Big Brother winner sold his home in Loughton while he was in prison to pay his legal bills.
